india - A tragic incident occurred in India when a man was fatally attacked by a wild elephant while trying to take a selfie with the animal.

A man in India tragically lost his life after being trampled by a wild elephant while attempting to take a selfie with the animal in the western state of Maharashtra. The elephant, which had entered the forest from the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh, was described by forest officials as highly aggressive.

Shashikant Ramchandra Satre, a 23-year-old electrician, was laying cables in the area on Thursday when he heard about the presence of a wild elephant in the Gadchiroli forest. Satre, along with two friends, decided to venture into the forest to catch a glimpse of the elephant. Upon spotting the animal, he tried to take a selfie from a distance, but the elephant, identified by forest officials as CME3, attacked him, leading to his tragic death. The other two men managed to escape.

Reports indicate that the same elephant had already killed at least seven other individuals between November 2023 and May 2024 in the states of Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Maharashtra.

Vivek Khandekar, the director of forest conservation in Maharashtra, stated, "We have alerted the nearby villages to take precautionary measures and have stationed personnel in every village. Our field workers, along with the rescue team, are actively engaged in the area, educating the local population on how to interact with wild elephants safely."

India reportedly holds the highest number of selfie-related deaths, followed by the United States and Russia. In a separate incident in southern India, a man was fatally mauled by an Asiatic lion in February after entering its enclosure to take a selfie.

In a similar incident in 2021, another man in Chhattisgarh was fatally attacked by an elephant while trying to take a selfie with the animal. A study published in the Journal of Travel Medicine reported a total of 379 selfie-related deaths worldwide between 2008 and 2021.
