washington - A man, Sebastian Zapeta, has been charged with murder after setting a woman on fire in the New York metro, resulting in her immediate death. The suspect had entered the United States without permission in 2018 and was deported to Guatemala shortly after.
The victim died on the spot due to her injuries.
The suspect, Sebastian Zapeta, entered the United States without permission in 2018 and was deported to Guatemala shortly after. It is unclear how and when the man re-entered the country illegally, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
Police stated that there seems to have been no prior interaction between the attacker and the unsuspecting victim. The man was arrested on a metro train on Sunday afternoon and was found with a lighter in his pocket, which he presumably used to set the victim on fire, according to the police.
"The depravity of this heinous crime is incomprehensible, and my office is determined to bring the perpetrator to justice," said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez in a statement.
