mali, west africa - At least 48 people have lost their lives in a collapse at an abandoned gold mine in Mali's west.
Tragedy Strikes in Mali
Recent reports confirm that a collapse at an abandoned gold mine near Kenieba town in Mali's Kayes region has claimed the lives of 48 individuals, most of whom were women. The incident occurred as a group of women were climbing into the open pit mine in search of gold. Rescue operations are currently underway as authorities continue to search for survivors. This is not the first mining tragedy in Mali, as just last January, a landslide at an illegal gold mine in the southern part of the country resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals.
