palermo - Over 1,200 carabinieri involved in the largest anti-mafia operation in Palermo since the 1980s, resulting in multiple arrests.
Large-Scale Police Operation in Palermo
In the early hours, Palermo witnessed a significant police operation against the mafia with over 1,200 carabinieri deployed.
Arrests took place in various locations including Porta Nuova, Ballarò, Zen district, and areas around Palermo such as Bagheria, San Lorenzo, and places near the Palermo airport.
The detainees include mafia bosses, 'colonels' playing crucial roles in the criminal organization, self-proclaimed 'men of honor,' and other individuals involved in the network. They face charges related to mafia membership, attempted murder, extortion, drug trafficking, complicity, weapon-related crimes, illegal gambling, and offenses against individuals and properties.
The arrested individuals were allegedly planning to re-establish a 'cupola,' the top hierarchy of the Cosa Nostra organization. Despite previous crackdowns by Italian authorities, the mafia persistently attempts to reorganize, only to be thwarted each time.
The modern-day Cosa Nostra shows a shift from its traditional roots, now utilizing advanced technology instead of archaic practices. Recent wiretaps revealed complaints by mafia members about Prime Minister Meloni's strict isolation prison policy under article 41bis, preventing their influence on the outside world.
Historically dominating the Italian mafia scene, the Sicilian mafia's power declined post the 1993 arrest of 'boss of bosses' Totò Riina, responsible for the assassinations of anti-mafia judges Falcone and Borsellino. The subsequent capture of Riina's successors marked a shift in power towards the 'ndrangheta from Calabria over the last three decades.
