Kenyan court sentences murderer of LGBTQ activist to 50 years in prison
nairobi - A Kenyan court has sentenced Jacktone O. to fifty years in prison for the murder of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba
A Kenyan court has sentenced Jacktone O. to fifty years in prison for the murder of 25-year-old fashion designer and LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba. The judge, Reuben Nyakundi, imposed this harsh sentence at the Eldoret court due to the 'diabolical manner' in which the murder was committed. The gruesome crime, discovered on January 3rd last year, shocked the nation as Edwin Chiloba's body was found in a metal box by the roadside in Eldoret, with socks stuffed in his mouth indicating he was suffocated to death. Jacktone O., a 25-year-old photographer and Chiloba's housemate during their university days in Eldoret, was identified as the prime suspect. The motive remains unclear, but it is known that Jacktone O. squandered Chiloba's money after the murder.
The heinous act sparked outrage in Kenya, particularly within the LGBTQ community, as homosexuality is illegal and punishable by up to fourteen years in prison in the country. Repression against LGBTQ individuals is prevalent, with reports of half the LGBTQ population facing violence due to their sexual orientation.
The LGBTQ organization GALCK+ responded cautiously positively to the verdict, stating, 'While the death penalty would be more fitting given the severity of the crime, the court acknowledges that such murders are no longer tolerated under Kenyan law.' A contentious bill further criminalizing homosexuality is currently under review in Kenya, potentially leading to the death penalty. Judge Nyakundi mentioned that Jacktone O. has the option to appeal the sentence, though it remains uncertain if he will pursue this course of action.
