Judge Allows Trump to File Objection in Hush Money Case
new york - A judge in New York has granted permission to incoming American President Donald Trump to file an objection to dismiss the hush money case against him, where he was found guilty earlier this year.
The judge refers to Trump's victory in the presidential elections on November 5 as the reason for temporarily suspending the conviction in the case. The 78-year-old Republican was supposed to receive his sentence by the end of this month, which could include up to four years in prison. The deadline for filing the objection has been set for December 2.
Prosecutors informed the court earlier this week that they were open to pausing the proceedings during Trump's presidency, but they also expressed opposition to dropping the case. Trump's lawyers seek to have the case dismissed, claiming that it would hinder Trump's government work, which they consider unconstitutional.
In May, Trump became the first former president ever to be found guilty in a criminal case. A jury determined that Trump falsified business records to conceal the fact that he had paid hush money of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels through his former lawyer Michael Cohen. The adult film star alleged that she had an affair with Trump years before the 2016 presidential elections.
