Japanese Restaurant Chain Closes Branches
Japanese restaurant chain Sukiya to close almost all of its two thousand branches temporarily after a rat was found in miso soup and an insect in another dish.
Sukiya apologizes for the insect incident in one of its Tokyo restaurants, following a previous rat incident in a different location.
The chain will shut down branches between March 31 and April 4, except for a few in shopping malls, to address pest control measures. The remaining mall restaurants will also close once technical conditions allow.
Sukiya operates around 1,970 stores across Japan, known for its beef bowls.
Japan has strict hygiene standards, making such incidents rare. In a separate 2024 incident, over 100,000 packs of sliced bread were recalled due to rat pieces found in two bags.
