rome - Italy retrieves over forty migrants sent to a reception center in Albania following a legal setback for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Legal Battle Over Migrant Centers
Italy has rescued more than forty migrants who were previously sent to reception centers in Albania. This decision comes after a legal setback for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In October, Italy opened two reception centers for migrants in Albania based on agreements between the two countries. However, Italian judges ruled that the migrants cannot be held in these centers and that Italy must take them in.
The judges argued that asylum requests cannot be processed outside the European Union. A court in Rome had previously ruled that the 43 men were allowed to enter the EU.
A coast guard ship is transporting the migrants to the southern Italian port city of Bari, where they are expected to arrive Saturday evening. The reception centers in Albania now remain empty.
