Italian Mayor Prohibits Residents from Getting Sick Due to Lack of Medical Services
belcastro, italy - The mayor of Belcastro, a village in southern Italy, has prohibited being sick in his municipality to draw attention to a major problem in the region.
The small village of Belcastro, with a population of 1,300, is currently without a doctor, and there are no operational medical services available. The nearest hospital is located 45 kilometers away.
Mayor Antonia Torchia urges the population to "avoid any illness that requires medical intervention, especially in emergencies, and to rest as much as possible." More than half of the village's residents are elderly, reflecting a common trend in many Italian villages as the country grapples with an aging population.
The mayor considers his decision as an "ironic provocation" to bring attention to the issue. The move has been more successful than his previous attempts to communicate the problem to regional health authorities and government officials. Torchia hopes that this action will awaken the conscience of both politicians and the healthcare system.
