Italian Caver (32) Trapped in the Same Cave as a Year Ago: Complex Rescue Operation at 600 Meters Depth
bergamo, italy - Italian speleologist Ottavia Piana is trapped in the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave at a depth of 600 meters for the second time in a year, leading to a complex rescue operation in Bergamo, Italy.
Italian speleologist Ottavia Piana has been stuck in the same spot in the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave since Saturday, where she was also trapped for 48 hours in July last year. Around 20 rescuers are working to free her from the cave near Bergamo, northern Italy.
The 32-year-old caver reportedly fell five meters at a depth of about 600 meters, sustaining multiple fractures. Despite her injuries, she is conscious and has been moved closer to the surface. The cave is cold and very humid, presenting challenges for the rescue team transporting her on a stretcher through the narrow passages.
The underground area is a complex network of caves, tunnels, and underground galleries, with many parts remaining unexplored. This adds to the complexity of the rescue operation as not all sections of the cave have been mapped.
Ottavia Piana is located approximately three kilometers from the cave entrance, with the rescue team taking four hours to reach her. Remarkably, this is not the first time Ottavia has been trapped in this cave, as she had a similar incident in July 2023 when she broke her leg at a depth of 150 meters.
This marks a challenging situation for Ottavia Piana, requiring a meticulous operation to ensure her safe retrieval from the depths of the Abisso Bueno Fonteno cave.
