Israeli Forces Launch Operation in Jenin
Israeli forces have initiated a military operation named 'Iron Wall' in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The operation has led to the deaths of at least 10 Palestinians and injuries to 40 others. Additionally, 25 individuals, including former detainees, have been taken into custody.
Palestinian Authorities Withdraw
Following the attacks, the Palestinian authorities in Jenin withdrew as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the attacks aim to 'eliminate terrorism' in the region. In response, Hamas called on Palestinians in the West Bank to escalate clashes with Israeli forces.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to launch intense attacks in the West Bank to prevent harm to Israeli settlers occupying Palestinian lands. The ongoing attack signifies a shift in Israel's security strategy towards eliminating 'terrorist infrastructure' in the occupied West Bank.
UN Warns of Threat to Ceasefire
Roland Friedrich, responsible for UN Relief and Works Agency operations in the West Bank, highlighted the advanced weapons used by Israel in the Jenin camp operation, including airstrikes. The UN official warned that the attacks could destabilize the fragile ceasefire agreed upon just days ago in Gaza.
Siege Intensifies
Since the ceasefire on January 19, cities and villages in the West Bank have been under strict siege by Israeli forces. The number of Israeli military checkpoints and gates has reached 898, with over 173 iron gates installed post-October 7, 2023. Cement blocks at these checkpoints restrict the movement of Palestinians, while Israeli settlers continue violent attacks in various cities.
