israel, gaza, egypt - Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz implies Israel won't withdraw from Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt, citing tunnels and security concerns.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz's Statement
Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz hinted at not withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor, pointing to security concerns and tunnels in the area. Katz referenced Israel's refusal to withdraw from certain points in Syria and Lebanon, indicating that the Philadelphi Corridor would remain as a buffer zone, similar to locations in Lebanon and Syria.
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen outlined four conditions for Israel's withdrawal from the corridor, including the return of prisoners, removal of Hamas, disarmament of Gaza, and ensuring full control in Gaza.
The agreement between Hamas and Israel, which came into effect on January 19, consists of three phases, each lasting 42 days. The first phase is set to expire on March 1.
According to the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza, Israel is obligated to begin withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor on the 42nd day of the ceasefire and complete the withdrawal on the 52nd day, falling on March 1. Israel seized the Rafah Border Crossing on May 7, 2024, followed by the occupation of the Philadelphi Corridor, a move rejected by Palestinian groups, the Palestinian Authority, and Egypt.
