teheran - An Iranian journalist and commentator has been executed by the Islamic authorities of the country after being reportedly abducted to Iran. The 69-year-old journalist, Jamshid Sharmahd, was sentenced last year in Iran on controversial charges.
An Iranian journalist and op-ed writer, Jamshid Sharmahd, has been executed by the Islamic authorities of Iran following his alleged abduction to the country. The 69-year-old Sharmahd was convicted in Iran last year, with human rights organizations such as Amnesty International criticizing the trial for dubious grounds.
The Islamic Revolutionary Court accused Sharmahd of spreading "corruption on earth," a term often used by the radical Islamic regime in Tehran for a variety of alleged offenses, typically linked to religious values.
The Iranian authorities also claimed that he had been in contact with the FBI, Mossad, and CIA. Sharmahd, who lived in the United States and held a German passport, was reportedly abducted from Dubai to Iran due to his efforts in uniting the Iranian opposition both in person and online. He also conducted radio and video broadcasts on the topic.
"This terrorist regime will not respond to any form of dialogue or diplomacy," said his daughter Gazelle to Deutsche Welle.
German Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz expressed outrage over the death sentence on social media, calling the execution a "gruesome crime" and labeling the trial as a "farce."
