Iran Awaits Trump's Return
iran - As the world eagerly anticipates the start of Donald Trump's second term on January 20th, his return is expected to reshape relations in the Middle East, particularly in the context of Iran.
With shifting dynamics in the Middle East and facing economic turmoil internally, Iran could face challenges during Trump's second term.
Despite ongoing difficulties, it is expected that the Trump administration will increase pressure on Iran by intensifying sanctions. Some officials even consider conducting airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities to prevent potential nuclear weapon development.
The weakening of militia forces in the region, known as the 'Axis of Resistance,' due to recent events such as Hezbollah's setbacks and the fall of Assad's regime in Syria, has significantly reduced Iran's influence in the region. Additionally, Iran's economy is struggling under the impact of sanctions, causing energy crises due to the lack of capacity improvements in the oil and gas-rich country.
President Ebrahim Raisi, elected in July with promises of social reforms, economic revitalization, and Western relations, has so far failed to deliver on these pledges. While protests against inflation and economic hardships have been limited, experts warn that unless economic solutions are found, Tehran is vulnerable to increased resistance against its regional endeavors. Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House, highlighted the challenges Iran faces due to its own policies, suggesting that the current situation may push Iran towards negotiations with the West.
Reports claim that President-elect Donald Trump conveyed a message to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, urging for restrictions on Iran-backed groups in Iraq, prevention of the spread of weapons held by non-state actors, support for the establishment of a new government in Syria, and non-interference in the internal affairs of the new Syrian administration.
