Authorities have not disclosed the motive of the 50-year-old Saudi. According to German media, he criticized Islam and was a fan of the far-right party Alternative for Germany. However, he also often appeared confused. The newspaper Bild reported that he had been considered potentially dangerous by authorities since 2015.
