brussels - ICC faces existential threat due to Trump sanctions, calls for EU intervention. Impact on staff and operations highlighted.

ICC Existential Threat by Trump Sanctions

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague is under threat due to US sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump earlier this year, says ICC President Tomoko Akane.

Trump accused the court of abusing its powers, such as issuing an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leading to severe consequences as highlighted by Judge Akane.

  • Companies distancing from ICC
  • Staff leaving due to fear of prosecution

Judge Akane emphasizes the challenges faced by the ICC in carrying out various tasks, including paying staff and conducting research. She calls for European Commission intervention to shield the ICC from the repercussions of US sanctions, warning that abandonment by the EU would leave the court vulnerable.
