china, taiwan, india, hong kong - After Covid-19, a new concern arises with the increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, Taiwan, India, and Hong Kong.

Following the global Covid-19 pandemic, the rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China has raised concerns. The virus has also been reported in Taiwan, India, and Hong Kong, with the symptoms being disclosed. The increase in respiratory-transmitted virus cases in China has led to hospitals becoming overcrowded and precautionary measures being taken, sparking concerns of a new outbreak.

Described as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), the virus has resulted in an increase in cases, especially among children in the northern provinces of China. Belonging to the same family as measles and mumps, HMPV can cause both upper and lower respiratory infections. Symptoms of HMPV include cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat, wheezing, rash, and shortness of breath.

In more severe cases, HMPV can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia. It is conveyed that the virus can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or by touching surfaces.

A statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry assures citizens and tourists about HMPV. Mao Ning, the spokesperson for the Ministry, mentioned the increased cases among children under 14, and stated that respiratory infections tend to peak in the winter season but are reportedly less severe and spread on a smaller scale compared to the previous year.

The Chinese National Health Commission recently reported an increase in respiratory infections, including HMPV, during the winter months. The situation has not been labeled as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control reported cases of the virus, emphasizing a higher risk for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Banjara Hills also confirmed cases, stating that HMPV primarily affects the elderly and children in the winter season, causing symptoms similar to the common cold and flu.

In addition to Taiwan and India, cases of HMPV have been reported in Hong Kong and Cambodia. Health officials in India reassured that there is no need to panic as HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses.

Doctors in Hyderabad, India highlighted that HMPV is not a new or unusual virus, stating that it is observed annually between July or August and December or January. Child doctor Sivaranjani Santosh mentioned, 'HMPV is not a mysterious virus. We see it every year during the months mentioned.'
