Greenpeace Pays €363,000 Settlement to Shell Over Environmental Action Against Oil Rig
london - Greenpeace has agreed to pay a €363,000 settlement to Shell in order to end legal action over protest against oil rig. The organization will refrain from demonstrating at three Shell oil and gas fields in the North Sea for the next five years.
Greenpeace has reached a settlement with Shell by agreeing to pay €363,000 to end a legal dispute over their protest against an oil rig. The oil and gas giant had filed a lawsuit seeking millions of dollars in damages more than a year ago.
Last year, Greenpeace members occupied a drilling platform in the British part of the North Sea for several days. The activists aimed to halt Shell's exploration for new oil and gas fields.
Shell claimed to have incurred significant additional costs due to Greenpeace's action, including the deployment of an extra safety vessel.
Greenpeace clarified that the settlement amount will go to the British Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and not to Shell.
As part of the agreement, Greenpeace has committed not to hold demonstrations at three Shell oil and gas fields in the North Sea for the next five years, and for another field for the next ten years.
