Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has announced his abdication, with his son Prince Guillaume set to take over on October 3, 2025.
The 70-year-old Grand Duke made the announcement during his Christmas speech. Henri has ruled over prosperous Luxembourg for nearly 25 years. Since October, he has already begun transferring duties to his 44-year-old son.
"I firmly believe in the next generation. It will take responsibility for a world that is hopefully more peaceful and sustainable," said the Grand Duke in his Christmas speech. "For most of my generation, the time has now come to retire. This applies to me as well."
Crown Prince Guillaume is married to the Belgian Stéphanie de Lannoy. The couple has two children: Prince Charles and Prince François.
