Google to Change Name of Gulf of Mexico to America Gulf
Google, in line with the decision of US President Donald Trump, will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to America Gulf on Maps application. The announcement also includes the renaming of Denali Mountain in Alaska to McKinley Mountain. The changes will be effective for users in the US, while users in Mexico will continue to see the region as the 'Gulf of Mexico'. Users outside the US and Mexico will see both names on Google Maps. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) in the US will be updated to reflect the changes, and Google Maps will quickly follow suit.
Trump's Instructions
The US Department of the Interior announced last Saturday that the name of the Gulf of Mexico will be changed to 'America Gulf' and Denali Mountain in Alaska will be renamed 'McKinley Mountain' upon the instruction of President Donald Trump. The Geographic Names Board, under the Department of the Interior, is working to update the official federal naming in the Geographic Names Information System to reflect these changes.
McKinley Mountain
In 1917, the name of McKinley Mountain in Alaska, the highest peak in North America, was given to honor the 25th President of the US, William McKinley. However, in 2015, the Obama administration changed the name of McKinley Mountain to 'Denali Mountain'.
Mexico Gulf
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated in a press conference last week that Trump can give the gulf the name he wants in the US, but the gulf will continue to be recognized as the 'Mexico Gulf' in Mexico and the rest of the world.
