berlin, germany - The German parliament narrowly rejected a bill proposed by the Christian Democratic opposition for stricter migration rules.
Opposition's Proposal Defeated in German Parliament
The Bundestag voted 338 in favor and 350 against, with five abstentions, on the proposal which included stricter border controls and entry bans for asylum seekers registered in another EU state.
Opposition leader Friedrich Merz faced criticism for considering AfD votes to limit migration flow, including disapproval from former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Thousands protested recent political developments in Germany.
Merz, 69, aims to become chancellor after the February 23 elections, with his CDU/CSU party leading in polls, followed by the controversial Alternative for Germany.
