germany - Health experts in Germany are warning about the increasing popularity of alpaca walks, highlighting the risk of infections from close contact with the animals.

German health experts are cautioning the public about the rising trend of alpaca walks, citing the potential for various infections due to intimate contact with the animals. Christian Menge, a researcher at the renowned Friedrich-Loeffler federal research institute, emphasized that alpacas carry numerous bacteria and diseases, such as diarrhea and tuberculosis. Additionally, these animals often suffer from mites, which can cause skin irritation in humans.

According to Menge, children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to these infections. He warns against the increasing popularity of alpaca walks in Germany, as the animals are now frequently entrusted to inexperienced owners, increasing the risk of bacterial infections, especially when they are kept alongside other animals like horses.

While there is no need for alarm, regular veterinary check-ups for alpacas are recommended. Individuals engaging in alpaca walks should avoid close contact, refrain from kissing the animals, and maintain good hand hygiene after any interaction.
