Georgian Court Dismisses Opposition Case on Election Outcome
tbilisi - The constitutional court of Georgia has rejected the opposition's lawsuit challenging the election results, sparking controversy.
The constitutional court of Georgia has declined to hear the case brought by the opposition regarding the election outcome. Both the pro-European opposition and President Salome Zourabichvili claim that the elections were marred by fraud and the results should be invalidated. However, the court has refused to rule on the matter.
The election commission had declared the ruling party Georgian Dream (GD) as the winner, despite exit polls indicating a majority for the opposition. This decision led to public outrage and protests. Tensions escalated recently when Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a halt to talks of EU accession, further fueling accusations from the opposition that Kobakhidze is pushing the country towards Russia deliberately.
