- Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, known as the 'father of artificial intelligence,' has warned that the probability of AI destroying humanity in the next 30 years has increased. Hinton stated that humans might become as powerless as a child in front of AI.

Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, who is regarded as the 'father of artificial intelligence,' has raised concerns about the possibility of AI eliminating humanity in the next 30 years. In an interview with BBC Radio, Hinton mentioned that the likelihood of AI wiping out humanity has increased from 10% to 20%. Previously, Hinton had stated that the chance of technology causing a catastrophe was 10%, but he now believes that the percentage is rising due to the unprecedented situation of having to control something smarter than ourselves.

The British scientist also expressed that when highly powerful AI systems are compared in terms of intelligence, humans would remain as intellectually capable as a three-year-old child. Hinton admitted that when he first began working on technology, he did not anticipate AI to progress as rapidly as it has. He highlighted that most experts in the field predict that within the next 20 years, AI could surpass human intelligence, which he finds to be a very daunting thought.

Last year, the 77-year-old Hinton resigned from his position at technology giant Google to be able to speak more openly about the risks posed by the development of artificial intelligence.
