gaza - Gazans welcomed the new year under the bombardment of the Israeli army, with 20 people losing their lives in the attacks in the first hours of 2025. Heavy rain has caused flooding in the area, leaving Palestinians struggling to deal with the winter conditions.

Gazans entered the new year amidst Israeli army bombings, resulting in the loss of at least 20 Palestinian lives and numerous injuries. The ongoing conflict in the region for the past 454 days shows no signs of resolution as humanitarian aid fails to reach the affected areas. The adverse winter conditions exacerbated by cold weather and heavy rainfall have left many displaced Palestinians in makeshift tents battling the elements.

The blocked entry of necessary aid materials by Israel has worsened the humanitarian crisis aggravated by the winter weather. The Civil Defense Directorate announced that more than 1,540 tents housing displaced Palestinians have been submerged in water due to the rainfall in Gaza, with some areas experiencing water levels exceeding 30 centimeters. Residents have reported damage to their belongings and living spaces due to rainwater entering the tents, causing further distress and hardship.

Health workers in the region have reported the deaths of at least five infants from hypothermia. The desperate situation in North Gaza, under Israeli siege and bombardment for months, has worsened, with the UN's inability to access the area hindering relief efforts. The limited access to aid has left approximately 2 million Palestinians in the region in dire need of essential supplies.

Attempts to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which saw a revival in December, have once again hit a dead end. Sources speaking to the American Wall Street Journal revealed the deadlock in the talks, with Israel insisting on only retrieving live hostages in prisoner swaps and rejecting Hamas's demands for the release of certain Palestinian detainees. Meanwhile, the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated the need for the release of hostages in Gaza, warning Hamas of severe consequences if Israeli hostages are not freed before his inauguration on January 20.
