French prosecutors have demanded prison sentences ranging from 1 to 16 years for eight suspects involved in the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty. The prosecutors sought the harshest punishment for a suspect believed to be a member of a terrorist organization that assisted in the preparations for the murder. Paty was beheaded in October 2020 near the high school where he taught after showing his students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson on freedom of speech. The perpetrator was an 18-year-old Russian refugee of Chechen origin who was shot dead by the police on the spot. Last year, a French court convicted six teenagers for their involvement in the attack.
