French Parliament Approves Proposal to Extend Budget
paris - The French National Assembly has approved a special law to extend the budget in a move aimed at preventing disruption of public services.
The French National Assembly approved a special law on Monday to extend the budget. This law is intended as a temporary solution until the deeply divided French parliament next year adopts a budget law prepared by the government of the new Prime Minister François Bayrou.
The French constitution allows for a special law to be adopted in the National Assembly, the French Lower House, which extends the provisions on tax increases and expenses from the current budget in case there is no proper budget law. The law is aimed at preventing interruption of public services.
The French Senate will consider the law on Wednesday. It must be ratified by December 31 to ensure that public services are not interrupted.
