Former Spanish Minister Accused of Corruption in Mask Scandal

barcelona - The former Spanish Minister of Transport, Ábalos, has been accused of corruption in a scandal involving the purchase of masks during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This accusation is a part of a larger investigation into corruption allegations surrounding the sale of medical supplies.

Businessman Victor del Aldama, a key figure in the case, claimed at the Supreme Court today that the former Minister of Transport, Ábalos, had denied the payment of commissions last week. However, investigations have revealed a web of corruption involving the purchase of masks and medical materials without following standard procurement procedures.

The case, known as Caso Koldo, revolves around Koldo Garcia, a former bouncer turned advisor to Ábalos. Garcia, with the support of his brother and wife, secured megacontracts worth 54 million euros during the critical weeks of the pandemic. These deals, which bypassed normal bidding processes, were signed with various government entities including Renfe/ADIF, the Spanish port authority, and regional governments.

Del Aldama claimed to have conducted business with Ábalos and Garcia since 2018, allegedly paying bribes for contracts related to masks and public works. The investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office includes allegations of bribery, participation in a criminal organization, abuse of power, money laundering, and corruption. Multiple arrests have been made, including Koldo Garcia and his relatives, with evidence reportedly collected against Ábalos as well.

Premier Pedro Sánchez, who has taken a strong stance against corruption, removed Ábalos from the PSOE party earlier this year due to his suspected involvement in the scandal. Ábalos now sits as an independent member in the parliament as investigations continue. The Spanish government is committed to eradicating corruption from its ranks and upholding transparency and integrity in public affairs.
