skopje/edinburgh - The nationalist Scottish politician and former Scottish premier Alex Salmond has passed away at the age of 69, confirmed by the police in Scotland. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer praises Salmond as a monumental figure in Scottish and British politics.

Alex Salmond, the former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has passed away at the age of 69. He led the SNP from 1990 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2014. In 2014, he initiated a referendum on Scottish independence as the first minister. However, the majority voted against it, leading to his resignation that same year. He became premier in 2007.

After stepping down as First Minister, he also resigned as the leader of the SNP. Nicola Sturgeon succeeded him as party leader and became the First Minister of Scotland in 2014. In 2018, Salmond left the SNP after multiple women accused him of attempted rape or sexual assault. However, he was acquitted in a criminal case. He formed a new independence party, but it had little success in elections.

Salmond reportedly passed away on Saturday while visiting North Macedonia. The cause of death is still unknown.
