A former police officer in Kentucky has been found guilty of violating the civil rights of Breonna Taylor. The death of Taylor due to police violence occurred around the same time as the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, leading to widespread anger and Black Lives Matter protests in the United States and beyond.
Taylor and her boyfriend were asleep when officers entered her apartment in connection with a drug case involving her ex-boyfriend. Her ex did not live at that address, and according to Taylor's new boyfriend, the officers did not identify themselves as law enforcement. In fear of a break-in, Taylor's boyfriend fired a shot, prompting the officers to open fire. Taylor was struck by multiple bullets and died.
The officer found guilty on Friday, Brett Hankison, fired his weapon into the apartment ten times during the raid, but did not hit Taylor. He was still charged with violating her civil rights for using excessive force. His sentencing will be determined later, and he could face life imprisonment.
