A new forest fire in Los Angeles, California has spread over 9,400 acres due to intense winds. The fire, which started on January 7th, is rapidly growing in the Hughes area. More than 31,000 people have been issued mandatory evacuation orders, with an additional 23,000 under evacuation warnings. The San Gabriel Mountains' 700,000-acre park has been closed to visitors as a precaution.
Chief Anthony Marrone of the Los Angeles County Fire Department stated that over 4,000 firefighters are battling the Hughes fire. The Eaton fire in the east, which burned 14,021 hectares, is now 91% contained, while the Palisades fire in the west, which scorched 23,448 hectares, is 68% contained.
Cal Fire reported that since January 7th, an area almost the size of Washington D.C. has burned, resulting in 28 fatalities and damage or destruction of around 16,000 structures. Over 180,000 individuals were evacuated during the fires in Los Angeles, with over $250 billion in damages and economic losses expected.
