helsinki - Finland has detained the oil tanker Eagle S, which the Finnish police believe caused damage to cables in the Baltic Sea, after it was declared unseaworthy during a Finnish inspection.
The Finnish authorities reported that the ship Eagle S is not allowed to sail 'until the serious deficiencies are rectified.' The Finnish police seized the tanker, carrying a cargo of Russian oil, on December 26. They suspect that the ship damaged underwater data and power cables by dragging the anchor along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The police have recovered the anchor along the Eagle S's route.
The cargo ship sails under the flag of the Cook Islands and is classified by the European Union as part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet, which includes ships used by Russia to circumvent international sanctions.
