FBI Investigates Travel of New Orleans Attacker Outside US
new orleans - The FBI is looking into the travels to Egypt and Canada of the suspected perpetrator of the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans.
The FBI is investigating the travels to Egypt and Canada of Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old former US military veteran who had pledged allegiance to the extremist group Islamic State and was the suspected attacker.
According to the FBI, Jabbar acted alone. The agency is now probing his activities in Cairo from June 22 to July 3, 2023, and in Ontario, Canada from July 10 to 13. They are looking into whom Jabbar met during these trips and whether they are linked to the New Orleans attack.
The FBI also disclosed that Jabbar had traveled to New Orleans at least twice in the months leading up to the attack, once in October and again in November. He stayed in a rental house in New Orleans during that time, filming videos in the French Quarter, where the New Year's Day attack occurred.
The FBI is also investigating whether Jabbar's recent visits to Houston, Atlanta, and Tampa are connected to the attack.
