FBI Criticized for Shortcomings Leading Up to Capitol Riot on January 6th
washington - An inspection reveals that the FBI made mistakes in the lead-up to the riots on January 6, 2021, at the Capitol in Washington.
An inspection has found that the FBI made errors in anticipation of the riots on January 6, 2021, in and around the Capitol in Washington. While significant and appropriate measures were taken to monitor the situation, there was a lack of effort to gather intelligence beforehand. This information could have been useful in preparations for that day, as mentioned in a report.
Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz conducted an investigation into the FBI's operations. It was revealed that the agency did not inquire with various FBI departments nationwide beforehand to see if there was any pertinent information known to the security services. This oversight represents 'a basic step overlooked,' admitted FBI's Deputy Director Paul Abbate to the inspection.
According to the investigation, there were no undercover FBI agents present at the Capitol riots. However, there were 26 informants. Three of them were tasked with monitoring specific individuals associated with terrorism. One of the three entered the Capitol during the riots, while the other two were outside on restricted grounds.
The remaining 23 informants had acted independently without FBI assignment. Three of them entered the Capitol, while eleven stepped into restricted areas. According to the inspector general, none of the informants were authorized or given permission to break the law, including entering the Capitol.
