A man who faked his own drowning and disappeared, fooling authorities and his family, has returned to the US and is facing legal charges. Ryan Borgwardt staged his own drowning and caused a massive search effort last summer, only to turn up alive after using his passport in Canada and traveling to Georgia. He has been charged with obstructing an investigation and has been released on bail.
While in Georgia, Borgwardt spent time with a woman in a hotel, raising questions about his return to his family. The 45-year-old father is accused of deliberately misleading the police and causing unnecessary distress to his loved ones. The bizarre case has garnered international attention, with Borgwardt making a discreet exit from the court to avoid reporters.
Instead of drowning, Borgwardt rode away on an electric bike after overturning his kayak in a lake. He then used a raft to reach the shore, all in a bid to make it seem like he had met a watery end. His actions were eventually exposed when he used his passport at Toronto airport, leading to his arrest.
