Fatal Collision near Washington
Authorities report that a collision between an American Airlines passenger plane and a military Blackhawk helicopter near Washington has resulted in the loss of 67 lives, with no survivors.
The tragic accident occurred in the evening around 9:00 PM local time above the Potomac River. The American Airlines plane, carrying 64 passengers, was en route to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport from Wichita, Kansas. The helicopter, with a crew of three, was on a training flight.
Divers have been working through the night to search for survivors, but the cold water temperature and the condition of the wreckage have made the operation challenging. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered.
President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and expressed condolences, calling it a terrible accident that could have been prevented. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collision.
The Reagan airport, located near the Pentagon, has a history of aviation disasters. The last major incident in 1982 resulted in 74 fatalities when a plane crashed into a river due to icing on the wings.
