The family of the murdered commando Simmie Poetsema met with one of the Americans who received an organ after his death. Stephani Wilson, who received a pancreas from Poetsema, expressed her gratitude by saying 'He saved my life'. Wilson, accompanied by her mother Toni, attended the opening day of the trial against the suspect shooter in Indianapolis to show support to the bereaved family. Holding up a t-shirt given by the family of the deceased elite soldier with the inscription 'Simmie, all gave some, some gave all', they shared their emotions in the courtroom.
Emotions ran high as the mother, stepfather, and sister of the murdered commando were present in court, facing the young man who took their son and brother's life. The incident occurred on a summer evening in 2022 during training near Indianapolis, where Poetsema was fatally shot in a bar fight. The suspect claimed he did not intend to kill Poetsema with the fatal shots, aiming to avoid a lifelong prison sentence.
The ongoing trial involves testimonies from five Dutch commandos while their identities remain protected due to active duty restrictions. The judicial process in Indiana follows a jury trial, where a jury of eighteen citizens will determine the suspect's guilt before the sentencing by the judge.
