False Killer Whales Stranded in Tasmania
157 false killer whales stranded on the coast of Tasmania, with 67 confirmed dead and 90 struggling for survival. Rescue efforts are hindered by unfavorable conditions, leading to the decision of euthanizing the whales. Only 2 whales were attempted to be refloated but were pushed back by strong winds and rough seas.
First Time in 53 Years
Brendon Clark from Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Services mentioned that this is the first stranding of false killer whales in Tasmania since June 1974. Over 80% of whale strandings in Australia occur in Tasmania, mostly on the west coast. False killer whales are an endangered species of oceanic dolphin, known to grow up to 6 meters in length and weigh up to 1.5 tons.
