valencia - The fire department in the Spanish municipality of Catarroja, in the Valencia region, evacuated a building with 50 apartments on Monday evening due to the risk of collapse. The underground parking lot of the building was flooded due to the floods in the region.
The foundation of the building has been weakened by the previous severe weather and needs to be reinforced to prevent the building from collapsing. The total of 150 residents of the building had to be relocated, as confirmed by the police to the Spanish newspaper Las Provincias.
On Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged a new aid package of 3.8 billion euros following the severe floods in his country. In Spain, at least 222 people died when heavy rainfall last month led to flooding. Dozens of people are still missing. The coastal region of Valencia was particularly hard hit. The damage is expected to be in the tens of millions.
