- European Commission proposes a 150 billion Euro joint borrowing for defense spending, part of a larger 'Re-Arm Europe' package in response to Trump's demands.
EU's Response to Trump's Pressure
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposes a 150 billion Euro joint borrowing for defense spending, aiming to address both short-term needs like supporting Ukraine and long-term responsibilities for European security. The proposal is part of a larger 'Re-Arm Europe' package that could reach 800 billion Euros in total. The joint borrowing is intended to reduce costs and increase interoperability in areas like air and missile defense, artillery systems, missiles, ammunition, and systems against unmanned aerial vehicles.
The proposal will be discussed at the upcoming EU Summit in Brussels. Currently, defense spending in EU member states is set at 2% of their GDP, but Trump is pushing for an increase to 5%.
