brussels, belgium - European Union foreign ministers decide to relax some sanctions on Syria, following a meeting in Brussels.

EU Foreign Ministers to Ease Sanctions on Syria

European Union foreign ministers have decided to ease some sanctions on Syria, a country that has been heavily sanctioned during the Assad regime. The decision, made during a meeting in Brussels, involves the relaxation of sanctions in the energy, finance, and aviation sectors. The EU, which has imposed strict sanctions on Syria since 2011, has set a roadmap to relax sectoral sanctions.

Political First, Then Technical

The roadmap, which is a political principle decision, will be followed by technical studies. Once these studies are completed, the relaxation measures will come into effect. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated after the meeting, "While aiming to act swiftly, we are also ready to reverse course if the situation deteriorates further. In parallel, we will increase humanitarian aid and recovery efforts." The EU will continue the arms embargo and maintain sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Assad regime.
