denmark - Emperor penguin Gus, found 3000 kilometers away from Antarctica, starts his return journey after being cared for in Australia.

After spending three weeks in Australia, Emperor penguin Gus is set to start his journey back to Antarctica covering a distance of 3000 kilometers. Gus, found by surfers on Ocean Beach on November 1, is a rare sight in Australia as Emperor penguins are native to Antarctica only.

Typically, penguins from Antarctica swim up to 1600 kilometers in search of food. However, Gus, who quickly gained the nickname after the Roman emperor Augustus, had ventured 3000 kilometers away from home.

During this extensive journey, Gus burned a significant amount of calories, leading to severe undernourishment. Weighing only 23 kilograms while adult Emperor penguins can weigh up to 40 kilograms, Gus was taken in and cared for by animal caregiver Carol Biddulph.

Now, approximately three weeks since Gus was discovered by surfers, he is showing signs of improvement. "The bird has put on quite a bit of weight," mentioned his caregiver. In three weeks, Gus gained 3.5 kilograms.

With warmer weather approaching, it was crucial to return Gus to his natural environment for him to thrive and regulate his body temperature, as stated by the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity and Conservation. Gus is ready to continue his epic journey back home thanks to the remarkable efforts of Carol Biddulph, highlighted by the department.

"I am confident he will make it home," expressed Carol Biddulph. "If he could swim this far, he will surely make it back. He is amazing," she concluded. In the presence of his caregiver, Gus jumped back into the sea from a boat off the Australian coast.
