milan, italy - Two Dutch nationals accused of impersonating Italian Defense Minister Crosetto in an AI scam targeting Italian business leaders.

AI Scam Involving Italian Minister

Two Dutch individuals are suspected of posing as Italian Defense Minister Crosetto in an elaborate AI scam. They used a synthesized voice to request urgent funds from Italian top entrepreneurs, claiming to ransom allegedly kidnapped Italian journalists. One victim, oil tycoon Massimo Moratti, reportedly transferred nearly a million euros, which was traced back to a Dutch bank account.

The suspects are accused of participating in a criminal organization to commit fraud, with reports suggesting a history of criminal activities. They have not been apprehended yet. Authorities suspect they may have acted on behalf of the mastermind behind the scam. Crosetto expressed relief that the extorted funds were located and frozen in a Dutch bank account.

Moratti fell victim to the scheme, believing the requests to be genuine. He acknowledged the sophistication of the operation, emphasizing the potential risk for anyone. The scammers targeted other prominent figures like fashion designer Giorgio Armani and former Prada executive Patrizio Bertelli.
