Donald Trump Appeals to Supreme Court to Halt Ruling in Hush Money Case
washington - President-elect Donald Trump is making a last-ditch effort to prevent a judge from ruling against him in New York this week. He has asked the Supreme Court to intervene, according to court documents.
President-elect Trump is facing sentencing in New York on Friday in a case involving hush money paid to a porn star who claimed to have had an affair with him. His lawyer made the payment, and last year a jury found that Trump tried to conceal the reimbursement to the attorney.
Trump's lawyers are working tirelessly to halt the ruling, which is scheduled to take place just a week and a half before he is inaugurated as president. Trump previously appealed to a New York appellate court, but his objection was rejected.
Trump argues that as the winner of the election, he is immune from prosecution, even though he has not formally taken office. The Supreme Court is being asked to initially halt the sentencing hearing, thus preventing it from proceeding.
Trump is the first former President to face criminal prosecution and be found guilty by a jury. Judge Juan Merchan in New York has indicated that Trump does not face the possibility of a prison sentence if the ruling is upheld.
