DNA test leads to arrest of TikTokker's own grandmother in a cold case investigation in the US
us - A DNA test taken out of curiosity by a TikTok user led to the arrest of her own grandmother in a 30-year-old cold case in the US.
A nearly three-decade-old case in the US has been unexpectedly solved as a TikTok user had a DNA test done out of curiosity, which resulted in the arrest of her own grandmother.
It was an innocent interest in her ancestry that led Jenna Rose, an American woman who is very active on TikTok, to have a DNA test done two years ago. Her surprise was immense when she received a call from a law enforcement officer earlier this year. 'He told me: I just wanted to let you know that I've reopened a cold case from about 25 years ago,' Jenna recounts on TikTok. 'Your DNA is a direct match to the victim in that case.'
The case is known in the US as the case of baby Garnet. In June 1997, the prosecutor's office and the police in the state of Michigan launched an investigation after the remains of a deceased baby were found in a pit toilet at the Garnet campsite in Hudson. The autopsy revealed there had been a full-term or near full-term pregnancy, between 36 to 42 weeks.
But who had left the newborn there remained a mystery for 27 years. That changed in August 2022 when 58-year-old Nancy Ann Gerwatoski was arrested. She has been charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, and concealing the death of an individual. If found guilty, she faces a life sentence. The woman has reportedly confessed to the crimes to the police.
Jenna doesn't seem to regret taking the DNA test. 'I've never met that woman. But she is the one they've been searching for for over 25 years.'
