Death toll rises in Los Angeles wildfires with Mexican assistance
los angeles - The death toll from the wildfires around Los Angeles has risen to sixteen, with Mexico offering to assist in the firefighting efforts.
The number of deaths from the wildfires around Los Angeles has risen to sixteen, with five found in the Pacific Palisades area and eleven in Eaton. Mexico has announced assistance in fighting the intense wildfires. Several people are still reported missing.
In the past 24 hours, the fire in Pacific Palisades has spread an additional four hundred hectares. Only 11% of the fire has been contained, with 8900 hectares already destroyed. The fire is moving towards the affluent neighborhoods of Brentwood and Bel Air fueled by strong winds. Around 12,000 buildings have been destroyed by the wildfires.
Los Angeles will receive help from Mexico to combat the fires. Both California Governor Gavin Newsom and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced this support on social media. Sheinbaum shared pictures of firefighters and aid workers at an airport with Mexican, United States, and Californian flags, along with a banner reading 'humanitarian aid'. Newsom mentioned 72 firefighters and emergency workers providing assistance.
The head of Los Angeles County has officially invited the incoming President, Donald Trump, to inspect the damages. In a letter to Trump, Kathryn Barger invited him to witness the devastation caused by the fires in Pacific Palisades, Eaton, and surrounding areas, to understand the rebuilding efforts needed.
Accepting this invitation would show your support for our citizens and gratitude towards our heroic responders. Your presence would be deeply felt and appreciated,” quoted from the Los Angeles Daily News letter.
