Costa Rica Emerges as Key Player in Narco Network for Drug Trafficking to Europe

san jose - Costa Rica's increased control over its main seaport has disrupted the flow of cocaine to Rotterdam and Antwerp.

Costa Rica has become a central hub in the drug trafficking network to Europe, following the normalization of the Colombian rebel movement FARC. Minister of Interior and Public Security, Mario Zamora, stated that since 2020, they have intensified control over their main seaport, which is a gateway for cocaine shipments to Europe. Zamora attributed this surge in drug trafficking to the peace agreement between Colombia and FARC in 2016, which halted the eradication of coca crops with glyphosate. This led to a significant increase in cocaine production, forcing narcos to explore new markets, including Europe.

To reach Europe, Mexican cartels turned to Costa Rica due to its strategic location on the drug route to America. Zamora explained that drug cartels aim to sell cocaine in the US and Europe for higher prices compared to Colombia. Amidst these activities, Costa Rica intercepted a mini-submarine carrying drugs, highlighting the extensive measures taken to combat drug trafficking.

Costa Rica's efforts, supported by Washington and Netherlands, have led to the seizure of drug shipments and arrests of smugglers. However, challenges persist, as drug-related violence has escalated in the country. Despite the progress made, Zamora acknowledges that tackling drug trafficking remains a complex issue that demands continuous cooperation with international partners.

Collaboration with the Netherlands has been instrumental in enhancing Costa Rica's anti-drug operations, with regular exchange of information and support in managing port security. Zamora emphasized the positive impact of this partnership on disrupting drug flows and addressing the root causes of drug-related crimes.
