Concerns Over New Wave of Refugees to Europe from Lebanon as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

World October 8, 2024 06:20

amsterdam - As conflict escalates between Israel and Hezbollah, over a million people in Lebanon are fleeing, leading to concerns about a new refugee influx in Europe.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated, over a million people in Lebanon have been forced to flee. The Lebanese government estimates that 1.2 million people (out of a population of over 5.5 million) have been displaced in recent weeks due to the war, mainly concentrated in the south of the country where Hezbollah holds power and Israel has launched a ground offensive. Israel has also been conducting airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in other parts of the country.

Zeina Dimassi, a aid worker, describes the humanitarian situation as catastrophic. Working in Lebanon for the Refugee Foundation, she witnesses daily the impact of the massive displacement of people who have lost everything they own.

Dimassi shares her concerns for the coming months, particularly as winter approaches and the conflict shows no signs of ending soon. Compounding the crisis is the lack of resources for emergency aid from the Lebanese government.

A confidential report from the European Commission warns of a possible new wave of refugees heading towards Europe due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Lebanon.

Dimassi explains the challenges faced by those trying to leave Lebanon, highlighting the struggle faced by the majority who do not have the means to escape.

The EU, which had previously seen Lebanon as a model for 'regional containment', recently halted a billion-euro support package in light of the current conflict. Despite providing 30 million euros in emergency aid, critics argue that more substantial efforts are needed to stabilize the country.

Geopolitical analyst Alex Krijger suggests that moderate countries in the region and emerging nations like India could collaborate to support the reconstruction of South Lebanon, to prevent further escalation and a larger influx of migrants to Europe.

The stakes are high, with the risk of ongoing conflict, increased human suffering, and mass migration to Europe if adequate action is not taken.
