China condemns Taiwanese president's visit to Hawaii
beijing - China strongly condemns the visit of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to the American state of Hawaii, stating that it will take resolute countermeasures against the recent US arms sales to Taiwan.
China has sharply criticized the visit of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to Hawaii, with the Chinese Foreign Ministry indicating that they will take firm actions in response to the latest US arms sales to Taiwan.
Despite not having official diplomatic recognition from most countries, the United States remains Taiwan's most important ally, provider of financial aid, and arms supplier. President Lai's two-day stopover in Hawaii is part of his tour across the Pacific Ocean, where he has been warmly received by the Americans.
Since 1949, Taiwan has been governed independently from the Beijing government, established by Chinese nationalists who fled after losing the civil war to the communists. China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province that should eventually reunify with the mainland. In October, the Chinese Ministry of Defense expressed a commitment to peaceful reunification but did not rule out the use of force.
