Ceasefire in Lebanon Marks a Diplomatic Success for Joe Biden

tel aviv - A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon brings a sigh of relief to the Middle East. However, challenges lie ahead as Donald Trump's presidency approaches.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is expected to be approved by the Israeli government, despite some opposition from ministers. Hezbollah, even though not an official party to the agreement, previously committed to do the same. The deal will be closed by the Lebanese government on behalf of the terrorist organization.

Israeli officials emphasize that the ceasefire does not signal the end of the war against Hezbollah. Final decisions are expected to be made next year, after Donald Trump takes office. This ceasefire marks a diplomatic success for Joe Biden, as he claims a victory just before Thanksgiving. However, potential last-minute confrontations could disrupt the peace process.

The agreement will allow the Israeli army to withdraw from southern Lebanon within two months. Lebanese troops will take over their positions while Hezbollah retreats behind the Litani River, about ten to twenty kilometers from the border.

The ceasefire is also hoped to temporarily halt direct clashes between Iran and Israel, which posed a threat to the entire Middle East. Tehran has indicated it might launch a military operation against Israel in retaliation for previous attacks. However, a ceasefire in Lebanon provides Iran with an excuse to avoid potential hostilities.

The agreement is also seen as a step towards resolving the situation in Gaza. With Hezbollah's potential approval nearing, Hamas is expected to reconsider its stance. Efforts are being made by the US special envoy to arrange a deal for Gaza following the Lebanon ceasefire.

The urgency for a deal is highlighted by the plight of 97 hostages, with concerns raised over their well-being as winter approaches. Despite the ongoing challenges, both Israel and the US are determined to secure peace in the region.
